本片改編自同名小說，講述了鏑木慶一作為一對(duì)夫婦被殺的殺人事件的嫌疑犯被捕，被判處死刑。他在移送過程中逃脫。鏑木越獄的消息在電視等媒體上被大肆報(bào)道，警方雖然全力追查鏑木的行蹤，但仍未能抓到他。另一方面，事件受害者夫婦中丈夫的母親井尾由子患有癡呆癥，受到了事件的創(chuàng)傷，仍在護(hù)理機(jī)構(gòu)進(jìn)行療養(yǎng)。鏑木一邊逃跑一邊在躲藏的地方改變了名字和樣子，他與施工現(xiàn)場(chǎng)的工作人員野野村和也等許多人相遇，并將他們從困境中解救出來。當(dāng)野野村他們發(fā)現(xiàn)鏑木是通緝中的死刑犯時(shí)，對(duì)于“他真的是殺人犯嗎？”開始產(chǎn)生疑問。
